Lake Tahoe has long inspired larger than life figures, from legendary writers to conservation minded landowners and the region’s earliest inhabitants. Mark Twain famously wrote about the clarity and brilliance of Lake Tahoe in the 1860s, calling it a place of almost magical beauty. Decades later, George Whittell Jr. quietly shaped much of the shoreline we treasure today by purchasing vast stretches of land and limiting development, helping preserve Tahoe’s natural character. Long before either arrived, the Washoe people lived seasonally around the lake, known to them as Da ow a ga, meaning the edge of the lake. Their deep cultural connection to the land remains an essential part of Lake Tahoe’s story.
