The Snow is Fine

South Lake Tahoe winter is unparalleled. Here, you’ll discover that a fresh blanket of snow contrasts dramatically with Lake Tahoe’s famously clear blue waters – a gorgeous backdrop for skiing, snowboarding, or snow angel-ing.

Lake Tahoe Winter Sports

There’s one thing that adrenaline junkies and snow bunnies can agree on; Lake Tahoe is the place to be in the winter. Tahoe’s legendary snowfall means snow is measured here in feet, not inches. The region also receives an average of 300 days of sunshine a year! A seeming contradiction, but one that means you can enjoy deep powder and work on your goggle tan, sometimes simultaneously. Opening dates for Lake Tahoe ski resorts typically begin in mid-November, and the ski season usually lasts through May or even as late as July.

Skiers and snowboarders of all abilities can enjoy everything from perfect corduroy to steep, deep, untracked chutes at world-class ski resorts like Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, and Sierra-at-TahoeEpic and Ikon passes can get you access to some of these resorts, depending on which pass you hold. Daily lift tickets are also available for purchase.

But there’s more to a South Lake Tahoe winter. Discover unique things to do in Lake Tahoe in winter when you embrace your inner fun hog on a sled or snowmobile. Feel the wind on your face as you glide on cross-country skis or ice skates. Gather your friends and family together for a rousing snowball fight on the beach. Or pack up a thermos of hot chocolate (or hot toddies) and enjoy a glorious Lake Tahoe winter sunset.

Things don’t wind down when the lifts close here. On the contrary, that’s when the fun begins. Après ski parties, live music, dancing, and Nevada-style nightlife make South Lake Tahoe unlike any other ski destination in North America.

As it lay there with the shadows of the mountains brilliantly photographed upon I am here at Lake Tahoe and there is magic at 6,000 feet.

Big Changes, Same South Lake Tahoe Winter

While things may look a little different at Lake Tahoe ski resorts, they’re still the same places you know and love. This is the 70th anniversary season at Heavenly. Upcoming events include The Toyota Air and Après event, tentatively scheduled for February 28 – March 2, The Celebrity Banked Slalom, tentatively scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 5. Sierra-at-Tahoe has harnessed the power of nature, reshaping the mountain to introduce expansive bowl skiing. Last year, they joined the Ikon Pass. In addition, they’ve got great terrain for beginners, making it a perfect spot, whether you’re new to the sport or bringing along a friend who’s ready to see what it’s all about. Two new trails will open in West Bowl this season, plus more learning terrain off Easy Rider Express and expanded terrain park zones in The Aspens and Upper Main. Kirkwood is continuing their reservations-based parking program to improve guest arrival and reduce congestion on weekends and peak days. Click this link for more details..
