This glacially-carved inlet is known as the crown jewel of Lake Tahoe. Emerald Bay was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1969, and for good reason. The deep clear blue waters of the bay are unlike any other part of the lake and offer amazing views of the surrounding mountains and waterfalls. Paddle your way into the bay and take a tour of Vikingsholm Castle, holding features reminiscent of 11th-century stone churches in southern Sweden. Emerald Bay also features a small picturesque island called Fannette Island in the middle with a small “Tea House” that can be accessed by a short hike. Be sure to pack and enjoy lunch on one of the many small secluded beaches in the bay!

D.L. Bliss State Park

Located just a few miles north of Emerald Bay lies D.L. Bliss State Park. Kayakers can launch their boats from Lester Beach, but it is important to keep in mind that trailers are not allowed in the day-use parking lots. This state park features Rubicon Point, which quickly drops off to one of the deepest points in the lake at a depth of 1,645 feet. The point also features the highest elevation lighthouse in the United States, which can be viewed from the water and even toured. This part of the lake is largely undeveloped and leaving you to enjoy peace on the water.
