Winter driving is like most of the stuff we do – with practice,
patience, and common sense, you can do it! Here are a few things you can do to get up to your favorite mountain safely:

  • Check road conditions before you leave home.
  • Carry chains – and know which tires they go on. And how to put them on. There are also professionals to install if preferred.
  • Give plenty of following distance.
  • Drive slowly, and avoid sudden actions like braking, acceleration, or turns.
  • Do not slam on brakes. Apply steady pressure on ABS-equipped (anti-lock braking system) vehicles and pump the brakes if necessary on non-ABS vehicles. If the vehicle begins to skid, steer in direction of slide and slowly remove foot from the accelerator.
  • Remove snow and ice from all vehicle windows, mirrors, lights, turn signals and license plates.
  • Turn on headlights to see and be seen.
  • Do not rely solely on GPS to find alternate routes, as it could lead to unmaintained roadways or hazardous areas.
  • Watch carefully for snow removal equipment. Do not pass without good distance and sight clearance.

Fire Restrictions Now In Place For Lake Tahoe Basin

In addition to year-round campfire restrictions, enhanced campfire restrictions go into effect on National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Enhanced campfire restrictions will remain in effect through Nov. 30, or until rescinded.

Enhanced fire restrictions say campfires (wood, charcoal, pellets, or any solid fuels) are only permitted within permanently installed campfire rings in the campgrounds and recreation sites listed in Exhibits A and B of the Forest Order. Under these enhanced restrictions, campfires are now prohibited in Blackwood Canyon, Luther Pass and Watson Lake campgrounds.

Effective Monday, June 23, 2025, fire restrictions are in place for the City of South Lake Tahoe until further notice.  No charcoal or wood fires are permitted during this time. The use of natural gas (NG), propane (LPG), or pellet BBQ grills, smokers, and firepits are permissible unless a red flag warning is issued.

“We ask that residents and visitors follow these fire restrictions to help minimize the potential of fire starts,” said Fire Chief Jim Drennan. “With the increase in dry fuels and high temperatures, there is a significant risk for fire danger and this is one way to prevent wildfires.”

As a reminder, during a red flag warning or critical fire weather conditions, open flames are not allowed which includes natural gas, propane, and pellet BBQ grills, smokers, and firepits.  Additionally, open flame devices such as tiki torches and fireworks, including sparklers and firecrackers, are prohibited in California year-round. If you witness the illegal use of fireworks or campfires, please call 911.

Summer fire restrictions will be in effect June 23, 2025 for the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District serving the communities of the Tahoe Township area until further notice. Fire restrictions prohibit all open burning.

Please note that federal and state lands campfire restrictions may differ. Check the local fire restrictions pertaining to your location. More information.

Trail closures, including the Flume Trail, are in effect and will remain in place through 2026 while the Nevada Public Works Division completes critical repairs on the Marlette Dam.

Most of D.L. Bliss State Park is closed and will remain so pending completion of a water system refurbishment project.

  • Hiking on the Rubicon foot trail from Emerald Bay State Park and accessing Lester Beach and Calawee Cove from the Lake or the Rubicon foot trail is allowed.
  • Off-trail walk-in access to rock-climbing boulder areas immediately adjacent to the East side of Highway 89 is allowed.
  • No services (restrooms, trash removal) or parking are available at D.L. Bliss State Park.

Keep Tahoe Awesome

The clearest blue water. The brightest green mountains. It’s awe and then some, but all this awesome doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from mutual respect for the South Shore, from locals and visitors alike. That’s why we created Rules to Lake By: five ways to practice responsible tourism at Lake Tahoe, so we can keep this place awesome today and awesome tomorrow.
