Saturday, July 11, 2026, 7:00 – 8:00 pm, Lake of the Sky Amphitheater at Taylor Creek – Stephen T. Mather: Live Historical Character Reenactment.

Step back into the early days of America’s national parks with acclaimed Chautauqua performer Steve Hale as he brings Stephen T. Mather to life at the Lake of the Sky Amphitheater. Portraying the National Park Service’s founding director in full period costume and character, Hale shares the remarkable story of the businessman whose vision helped establish the National Park Service in 1916.
Through an engaging first-person presentation, audiences will follow Mather’s journey from marketing success in the borax industry to becoming one of the most influential conservation leaders in American history. His efforts laid the foundation for protecting some of the nation’s most treasured landscapes and historic sites, a legacy that continues across hundreds of park units today.
The program also highlights Mather’s connection to the Lake Tahoe region, including a 1919 visit to Fallen Leaf Lake that helped shape the National Park Service’s approach to visitor interpretation and education.
