Created by professional snowboarder Travis Rice, the Natural Selection Tour showcases the world’s top riders from Olympians to big mountain film icons all competing on natural and naturally enhanced terrain. Natural Selection DUELS features six iconic mountain venues around the world, including Kirkwood, where head-to-head competition between two top riders will decide who moves on to the next stage of the 2025 Natural Selection Tour in Revelstoke.
Magical and untamed, Kirkwood is a high-alpine playground for those seeking big-mountain adventure. Known for its steep, rowdy and technical terrain, Kirkwood has earned its place as a bucket-list destination for freeskiers and riders, fostering a legacy of world-class athletes. Its unique location atop the Sierra Crest creates the K-Factor—a geographical predisposition to receive some of the lightest, driest, and most plentiful snow in the Tahoe region. This combination of terrain and conditions is why the Natural Selection Tour chose Kirkwood to host a duel this season.
A quick reminder: NST is not our typical spectator event. Riders will use the entire competition window to decide when and where conditions are best to film their runs. As a result, there’s no set time for spectators to watch at Kirkwood. However, you can expect to see the athletes riding and filming around the mountain throughout the competition window. Their full runs will premiere on Red Bull TV, February 24, 2025, and we’re planning an exclusive viewing of the showdown at Kirkwood—details to come. We’ll also host a Meet and Greet with the athletes on Friday, February 14th. Stay tuned for more info on that, too.
The Natural Selection Tour (NST) Duels are competitions where two pro snowboarders go head-to-head to film the best lines and tricks using natural terrain. Kirkwood is one of six venues selected this year and will host Brandon Davis and Sevi van der Meer from Jan. 24–30.
Can people watch? The riders can use the entire competition window to choose when and where the best conditions will be to film their runs, so there isn’t a set time for spectators to watch. However, you can expect them to ride and film at Kirkwood throughout those five days. We’re also planning a meet-and-greet during the event if time allows — stay tuned for details!
What terrain will they be riding? The exact terrain and location will be finalized closer to the event based on weather and snow conditions.
The winner of the Natural Selection DUEL competition held at Kirkwood will join 18 fellow returning and invited Natural Selection Tour riders for two LIVE competition days during the YETI Natural Selection Revelstoke. The full Revelstoke event will broadcast live on Red Bull TV during the March 10-17 competition window.
