Bliss State Park to the north, allowing you to go in either direction.  The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, camping, and nature trips, and is best used from April until September.

What You’ll See Along the Adventure

Winding along the edge of Lake Tahoe, the Rubicon Trail feels like one long scenic reveal. The path hugs the shoreline, opening up to constant views of that clear, blue water, with stretches of forest and granite cliffs that give it a rugged, peaceful feel. Early on, you will spot the small but historic Rubicon Point Lighthouse tucked above the lake. As you continue, the trail brings you to the striking Vikingsholm Castle, which looks like it was lifted straight out of a Nordic fairytale. Just beyond, sitting quietly in the bay, is Fannette Island, the only island in Tahoe, where you can see the remains of an old stone tea house. Between these highlights, there are plenty of quiet coves, rocky viewpoints, and little stretches where it is just you, the trees, and the lake stretching out in front of you.

Preparing for a Day on the Trail

A day on the Rubicon Trail is best enjoyed when you come prepared, especially since it is easy to lose track of time with views like those along Lake Tahoe pulling you in at every turn. Start with the basics. Bring plenty of water, more than you think you will need, since there are long stretches without access to services. A refillable bottle or hydration pack works well. Sunscreen is a must, even on cooler days, because the sun reflects strongly off the lake. A hat, sunglasses, and a light layer can make a big difference as temperatures shift throughout the day.

Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, and a small backpack make it easy to carry everything without feeling weighed down.

For food, think easy and satisfying. Grab and go sandwiches, wraps, or even a hearty salad travel well and are perfect for a lakeside break. Add a few snacks like trail mix, fresh fruit, protein bars, or jerky to keep your energy up as you go. Many hikers like to find a quiet spot near the water, maybe with a view of Fannette Island or tucked into a shaded cove, and turn it into a relaxed picnic.
