January 5, 2026 (SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev.) – It’s a Happy New Year indeed at South Lake Tahoe as area ski resorts received nearly 3-4 feet of new snow over mountain peaks through the Christmas and New Year holidays, including storms this past weekend and a promising forecast calling for more during the first week of 2026.

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 17” inches of new snow in the past 48 hours and now boasts 98 of 111 trails open; Sierra-at-Tahoe has 16” of fresh snow and 40 of 48 trails; Kirkwood has 29” of snow with 55 of 85 trails open. For current lift and mountain operations visit: Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Mountain Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe.

For Tahoe travelers via car, tourism officials recommend being prepared by continually monitoring road conditions and carrying chains. For winter driving tips and key travel information visit “Know Before You Go” and Responsible Recreation.

Following a stubborn start to the season, the destination is now primed and offering top conditions for winter enthusiasts.

“Our resorts primed the skiing pump with their snowmaking capabilities but now we’re talking top to bottom skiing and riding for visitors and locals with our legendary sunny days between storms,” said Carol Chaplin, president and CEO of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “Our locals and partners in lodging, restaurants, attractions, entertainment and gaming are welcoming 2026 with open arms!”
