Tahoe History Talks at The Museum Complex

May 20

7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

July 1 @ 2:41 pm

Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 7:00 pm. Dave Borges, The History of Stone Mile Markers at the History Museum Complex.

Our guest speaker for our Spring General Membership Meeting will be LTHS Board Member-at-large Dave Borges. Sixteen years ago, Dave spent over 3 years locating and photographing all 62 stone mile markers that were placed along the south side of Highway 50 over a hundred years ago. The markers start at the Courthouse in Placerville and end at the California Nevada state line.

While the original markers were made of wood, over time, they were replaced by the stone markers that you see today. The markers are said to have been carved by the prisoners at Folsom Prison. Without odometer technology, the markers were a way for travelers to determine their distance from Placerville—what might be considered a primitive GPS system today.

After attending our event, visit the History Museum and Bookstore from 8:00 to 9:00 pm to buy your copy of author Paul Nelson’s book, “Lost Grand Resorts of Old Tahoe.” Paul will be giving a presentation at the South Lake Tahoe Library on May 27, 2025 at 5:30 pm—a week after our event.

The History Museum and Bookstore will also be open this Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please join or renew your membership for 2025 to receive a discount on your purchases of books, merchandise, and photos in the bookstore.

Parking is available at the History Museum and Senior Center parking lots.

Suitable for all ages, Tahoe talks are free, but donations are gladly accepted.
