We love hosting competitions at legendary Kirkwood, and look forward to seeing athletes and spectators alike for the invite-only “Best of the Americas” event to be hosted again among the steep complex of alpine terrain known as The Cirque. The weather window for the 1-day competition runs March 29-31, and if everything works out, we’ll hold it Saturday the 29th.
With more than 25 years of history hosting and supporting competitive Freeride, Kirkwood holds elite ranks as early adopters who helped forge the way for our contemporary Freeride schedule, packed with IFSA events from coast to coast. The shared passion runs deep, and if you’ve never been out this way, you’re in for a treat. This is a no-frills skiers’ mountain. You’ll find no shopping, very little of a dining scene (plan ahead) and a lovely little valley, surrounded by a prominent towering ridge where good snow is easy to find, and there’s enough for us all to share. This might be California, but you’re a long way from Hollywood; you’re here for one reason only, and this is it!
Among the venues we may use for this event are some options within the Permanently Closed terrain of Kirkwood’s Cirque. While these do get controlled throughout winter (as there is public access downhill) the resort sometimes requires all competitors to wear full avalanche gear, depending on conditions: Transceiver, Shovel and Probe. Depending on short-term conditions, this is sometimes pared back to Transceiver only, and we may end up competing on a fully in-bounds venue, but you should be preparedly equipped in your planning.
